Visiting Students
Welcome
We welcome visiting M4 students! As of now, the only Emergency Medicine elective available for visiting students is the M4 EM Acting Internship, a four week rotation designed for students wanting to go into the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
Application Process
Available Months
Our EM AI rotation runs six times a year, May through October. The months of June, July, August, September, and October are available for visiting students.
VSAS Logistics
Away students must apply through Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS), and the dates have to match the same rotating dates of our University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville academic calendar. Historically, the catalog for Prisma-Health Upstate posts on VSAS March 1st, applications are accepted starting March 15th, and we start extending initial invitations early to mid April.
Required Materials
All students must submit a USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 or COMLEX score. Students must also send a Letter of Intent addressing their interest in Prisma Health-Upstate (no more than 300 words). This is not a personal statement explaining student interest in the specialty of EM but rather a letter of intent as to why they want to rotate here, at Prisma Health-Upstate in Greenville, SC.
Obtaining a SLOE
All students who want a Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) may have a group SLOE written for them at the conclusion of the rotation. For more information on the acting internship rotation, including grading and assessment click here.
Housing
Housing is not provided, but the Office of Student Affairs at the USC School of Medicine Greenville can suggest housing options. Visit https://www.sc.edu. You may also consider visiting Rotating Room.
URM Scholarships
Our Department of Emergency Medicine here at Prisma Health-Upstate in Greenville, SC is pleased to offer an Underrepresented in Medicine Scholarship each academic year to a qualified individual.
